Old paint cans hanging about that you want to get rid of in a responsible manner?

Whenever O’Connor’s Painting Service completes a job, any unused paint we leave with the customer with a description of where the paint was used in the house written on the can. These paints come in handy if there is ever a need for the homeowner to touch up a spot here or there years later. A quick tip, be sure to store your paint in a warm area like your basement or laundry room to make sure the paint remains stable.

After awhile, you might want to eventually dispose of old cans of paint you no longer need. You just can’t throw them in your garbage “as is”. To dispose of paint in a environmentally responsible manner. There are a few steps you should follow.

First, I recommend keeping a log of the paint brand (Sherwin Williams/Behr), type (interior/exterior), sheen (flat/satin), color name, color number and the formula if a custom blend.  You never know when you might need to reference this information later.

Second, check with our local county waste authority for there rules on disposing of paint waste. For example in Montgomery County, Maryland if you are a resident, you can go to the dump and they have a special area set up to accept your old paint along with other household hazardous waste.

Finally, dry your waste paint with a product such as Krud Kutter Waste Paint/Colorant Hardener. It’s great for latex and oil-based paints.  You can find the product at most home improvement stores. Add the crystals to the paint can. Stir paint til it thickens, then let dry hard. You can now dispose of your old paint. Some municipalities will let you dispose of this hardened paint right in you garbage can but call first to make sure.

Project Behr Paint-Part II Premium Plus Ultra

The Behr Premium Plus Ultra line provides paint and primer in one coat, and provides superior coverage with fewer applications. Typically this line of paint is better for darker colors. This self priming paint can, in most instances, cover in just 2 coats when going over dark colors vs. 3 or 4 coat that other brands of paints need for proper coverage. For example when covering a bold color like hot pink the Behr Ultra product covered the pink in 2 coats saving time and money in material expense vs. the Behr Premium Plus product discussed in a previous posting.

Behr Premium Plus is a different type of paint than
Behr Premium Plus Ultra

Once you choose Behr Premium Plus Ultra for your project, the next step is choosing your sheen. The following information on Behr Ultra sheen can offer you guidance.

Behr Premium Plus Ultra Interior Flat Enamel
This paint and primer in one has a 3% sheen level. It is washable; however, in order to touch up you must paint from wall to wall. This paint can not be used to simply cover a small area or spot. It is easy to clean and is scuff resistant. This paint has a low sheen finish with high sheen performance.

Behr Premium Plus Ultra Interior Eggshell Enamel
This paint and primer in one has a 25% sheen level. This product is washable, but again, for a touch up you must paint from wall to wall. Please note that the higher the sheen level the more apparent imperfections will be on walls where drywall meets drywall.  It is a 100% acrylic latex product that provides outstanding durability, scrub ability, coverage and mildew resistance.

Behr Premium Plus Ultra Interior Satin Enamel
This paint and primer in one has a 35% sheen level. This product is washable, but again a touch up includes a wall to wall paint job. It offers a pearl-like sheen that is stain, water and mildew resistant. It is ideal for use in high traffic areas and on surfaces where moisture, mildew or fungus growth may be a problem.

Behr Premium Plus Ultra Semi-Gloss Enamel
This paint and primer in one has a 50% sheen level. It is washable, but if marks cannot be removed through wiping then you will have to paint from wall to wall. It is 100% acrylic latex product provides a radiant, sleek sheen and is easy to clean. It provides a durable finish that protects against moisture, mildew and stains.

Project Behr Paint – Decoding Sheen

A common question I get when I am helping customers pick paint for their contracted painting job with O’Connor’s Painting Service is, “which sheen should I choose?” Understanding paint sheen or “shininess” is the key to making your selection. Let me try to give you a description of the levels of paint sheen for the Behr Premium Plus line of paint that can be found at Home Depot. I have gathered the following information to help guide our O’Connor’s Painting Service customers.

Behr Premium Plus Interior Ceiling Paint
This paint has 0% shininess or sheen. It is NOT washable but is an excellent choice for touch up. Touch up means if you scuff the walls although it will not wash off, you can re-paint that area of the wall and the paint will blend.
Behr Premium Plus Interior Flat Paint
This paint has a 3% sheen level. This paint IS washable but to touch up you have to paint wall-to-wall. That means you can not just paint a small area or spot if the mark or scuff on the wall did not wash out. To cover seamlessly you must paint the complete wall.
Behr Premium Plus Flat Enamel Paint
This paint has a 10% sheen level. This paint IS washable but just like the above interior flat paint description, you have to paint wall-to-wall if your marks on the wall do not wash out.
Behr Premium Plus Interior Eggshell Paint
This paint has a 25% sheen level. This paint IS washable but again, if the marks can not be removed you will have to paint wall-to-wall instead of just being able to touch up a spot.
Behr Interior Satin Enamel Paint
This paint has a 35% sheen level. This paint IS washable but again, if the marks can not be removed you will have to paint wall-to-wall instead of just being able to touch up a spot.
Behr Interior Semi-Gloss Enamel Paint
This paint has a 50% sheen level. This paint IS washable but if marks can not be removed through wiping you will again have to paint wall-to-wall to eliminate the the mark without any noticeable lines.
Behr Premium Plus Interior / Exterior Hi-Gloss Enamel
As you would expect, this paint has a 100% sheen level. This paint IS washable. If a really stubborn mark will not wash off, again you will need to repaint the entire wall-to-wall area for the area to look seamless to the existing paint.

In conclusion, the higher the sheen or shininess, the more the imperfections on your walls such as spackle areas or where drywall meets drywall will be visible.
